About Charcoal Player
Charcoal Player is back. Add your practice folder once, and your library stays exactly where you left it — through restarts, through updates. No ads, no account, no data collection: your music never leaves your Mac. Every feature the original app had in 2017 is free, forever.
LYRICS, RIGHT ON THE PLAYER
The app opens on Now Playing: big artwork, track info, and lyrics that scroll with the music. Lyrics come from your own files — a .lrc beside the track, lyrics embedded in the file, or a matching .txt. Nothing is looked up online. Adjust the offset per track when the timing is off (your audio file is never modified). Press ⌘L for the track list, which slides over the top.
TAKE THE SOUND APART
Play any song and split it into vocals, drums, bass, guitar, piano — up to 6 stems, processed entirely on your Mac. Keep only the vocals to learn a melody, or mute them for a backing track. Meetings, interviews, and lectures get speaker lanes instead, so you can follow — or isolate — every voice in the room. Separation starts when you ask for it: press Separate This Track (or Analyze Speakers) in the panel. Already-separated tracks open instantly, and automatic start is still there in Settings ▸ Source separation.
CLEAN, PITCH-PRESERVED SLOW-DOWN
Practice at 0.5×–3.0× speed without the chipmunk-or-monster effect. Built for transcription, dictation, ear training, and slow practice of anything you're learning by ear.
SAMPLE-ACCURATE A-B LOOP
Mark a phrase, hit repeat, and it loops exactly — no drift at the boundary. One key for A, one for B, one to toggle the loop.
YOUR LIBRARY, PROTECTED
If a folder ever goes offline — an external drive unplugged, a permission that needs re-confirming — Charcoal Player never deletes your tracks. They're marked, not removed, and reconnecting takes one click.
KEEP WHAT YOU ISOLATED
Export any combination of stems or speakers — in original quality, or your pick of format (MP3, AAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, FLAC).
PLAYLISTS, AND A SHORTCUT FROM FINDER
Build playlists in the sidebar: drag tracks in, or right-click any track and choose Add to Playlist. Start from a playlist and it plays in that order. In Finder, right-click any audio file and choose Open With → Charcoal Player — it plays right away, and you choose whether it also joins your library.
BUILT FOR THE MAC
Full keyboard shortcuts, custom-second skip (0.5–30s), a menu bar mini controller with three lines of lyrics, 12 languages, and a window that resizes the way you want it to — not a phone app stretched onto a bigger screen.
FREE, AND WHERE IT ENDS
Everything above is free — playback, speed, A-B looping, and source separation (stems, speaker isolation) have no limits. Exporting to a file (a separated stem, a filtered speaker track, a re-encoded original) is free 3 times per rolling 24 hours. Beyond that, unlock unlimited exports with a one-time $49.99 Lifetime purchase, or an auto-renewing subscription at $2.99/month or $29.99/year — Family Sharing supported on all three. Owned the original 2017 Charcoal Player, or installed any version before 2.1.0? You already have unlimited exports, automatically.
ABOUT UNLIMITED EXPORTS
Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period; manage or cancel anytime in System Settings → Apple Account → Subscriptions. Restore purchases anytime in Settings → Export → Restore Purchases. Prices are shown before purchase in your local currency and billed to your Apple Account.
